Motivational Interviewing for Recovery Coaches

Motivational Interviewing (MI) helps persons to find their motivation to go through with needed changes. This introductory MI course teaches you the basics of how to explore their ambivalence and elicit change talk. You will learn how to strengthen a person’s feelings of being able, willing and ready to make changes.

The motivation needed to seek out help or make other changes is not easy to muster. This course will give you an empathetic approach and the basic tools you will need to help your clients move forward.

The course will include lectures, group discussions, video examples and practical exercises. When you take the course, you will learn about the following:

·        The Spirit of MI

·        Motivation, discrepancy and ambivalence

·        Important components for motivation

·        The cycle of change/Stages of change (of Proschaska & Diclemente)

·        Reflective listening

·        Eliciting change talk

·        OARS(Open-ended questions, Affirmations, Reflections, and Summaries)

·        Strategies and conversation tools

·        Dealing with resistance (Disharmony and sustain talk)

·        Traps for the interviewer

·        Practical exercises and discussions
